Findings

Bacteria

  • Bacteria continues to be the most widespread and pervasive pollutant in the Region.

  • 63 percent of stream segments throughout the H-GAC area are impaired by elevated levels of bacteria.

  • 23 percent of segments show significant improvement in bacteria levels compared to 12 percent showing degradation.

Dissolved Oxygen

  • Depressed Dissolved Oxygen levels is a concern in over 31 percent of area water bodies.

  • 27 percent of segments show significant improvement in DO levels compared to 5 percent of area segments showing degradation.

Nutrients

  • Concerns for nutrients continue to rise.

  • Over 42 percent of water bodies throughout the basins contain nutrients at levels higher than the screening criteria.

  • 36 percent of area segments show significant improvement compared to 26 percent showing rising nutrient levels.

Chlorophyll - a

is getting worse in 25 percent of area segments compared to only 1 percent showing improvement.

PCBs and Dioxins

  • PCBs and Dioxins continue to be of great concern throughout tidal segments as well as Bays and Estuaries.

  • PCB and Dioxin levels exceed standards in 34 percent of tidal waters

  • PCB and Dioxin levels exceed standards in 65 percent of bay segments

  • PCB and Dioxin levels exceed standards in 17 percent of tidal streams
