Bacteria Implementation Group

In 2008, H-GAC formed the Bacteria Implementation Group. This group of government, business and community leaders shared a common goal of developing a plan for reducing bacteria in area waterways. The project area includes approximately 4 million people and waterways in part of 10 counties: Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris Liberty, San Jacinto, Walker, and Waller. With the help of 14 workgroups and numerous additional stakeholders, the BIG drafted a plan to address elevated levels of bacteria within the project areas boundaries. The plan addressed many sources of bacteria in the region, including wastewater treatment facilities, sanitary sewer systems, OSSF, storm water runoff, illicit discharges, agriculture, livestock, wildlife, pets, sediment resuspension and regrowth. The plan includes provisions for an iterative process involving annual evaluations of progress, the latest research and stakeholder involvement. In 2011, H GAC will solicit public comment and formal support of the plan prior to submission to TCEQ.
